What The Tax Man Couldn't Afford To Lose

And what that tells you about everything you were never taught

The UK tax year starts on 6th April.

You've probably never questioned that. Neither had I - not really. It's just the date. The date HMRC decided on. The date your accountant works backward from. The date that arrives every year with its particular flavour of administrative urgency, and it’s associated money stress - to ensure allowances are utilised and tax is paid. The other day I was chatting with a friend, he said he had been feeling a bit discombobulated. I asked if his birthday was in October, it was - I gave him the explanation why he felt this way. He always wondered why New Year knew you didn’t feel right, which led to a conversation about why the 6th of April. So why the 6th of April?

Here is why….

In 1752 Britain switched from the Julian calendar to the Gregorian calendar. The Julian calendar had accumulated an eleven day error over centuries of small miscalculations. The correction was straightforward - remove eleven days from September. People went to sleep on the 2nd and woke up on the 14th.

Eleven days. Gone. Who said time was real, if it could be manipulated just like that - but thats a story for another day.

Anyway the tax collectors refused to lose the revenue, no comment!

So they moved the tax year start date forward eleven days - from 25th March, which was the old legal new year, a few more days for leap year correction and thats the date we land on….

6th April.

The date your tax return is calculated from a remnant of an ancient new year - the spring equinox, the actual moment the earth renews - shifted eleven days because nobody in 1752 wanted to absorb the financial loss of a calendar correction.

25th March was the spring equinox. 6th April is its ghost.

HMRC is running on a pre-Christian calendar and nobody told you.

Once you see this you start seeing it everywhere…… so I looked further why does the school year start in September? - not because September is pedagogically significant, but because Michaelmas falls on 29th September. The medieval quarter day. The feast of St Michael the Archangel - depicted with scales, weighing souls - placed by the church at the exact point the agricultural year turned toward darkness. The harvest completing. The reckoning beginning. Medieval universities ran on church calendar terms. Schools absorbed the universities. Once again why does school starts in September, it’s something I hadn’t questioned, turns out it’s the ghost of a threshold that predates the institution by millennia.

Christmas falls on 25th December - not because of any historical record placing the birth in December, but because the winter solstice was already being celebrated across dozens of traditions. The unconquered sun. The moment the light begins to return after the longest night. The church placed its festival of light and return on the date where the celebration was already happening. The candles and the gathering remained. The original meaning was absorbed into a different story.

Easter is the one that still shows it’s link to the moon. Calculated as the first Sunday after the first full moon after the spring equinox. Entirely lunar. Moves every year. Cannot be fixed because the moon won't allow it. The institution kept the lunar calculation while teaching that lunar connection was superstition.

Every significant date in the British calendar is either a fossil of a natural cycle or an institutional absorption of something older.

The natural cycle was never removed. It was renamed. And the understanding of why these dates matter - why the body responds to them, why something shifts at the solstice and the equinox and the threshold points of the year - was what got extracted.

When I talk about the knowledge that was taken, not in the dramatic sense. Not as conspiracy, as the information is still there provided you look for it. But its a pattern that runs through every institution that has shaped the world most of us grew up in.

The knowledge that connects people to their own cycles - to the seasons, to the body, to the timing that actually maps to what human beings do and feel and need - that knowledge was held by specific people in specific communities for thousands of years.

The herbalist who understood that nature provided the answers (the dock leaf is always next the nettle - but I’m sure thats just a coincidence). The midwife who understood the body at its thresholds. The elder who understood the cycles of a human life well enough to name what was happening before the person experiencing it had language for it. The shaman who worked with what lay beyond ordinary perception. The wordsmith who understood that language isn't just communication - it's frequency, it's instruction, it's the technology through which one human being changes the field of another.

These people were called witches. Were tried, drowned, burned. Their knowledge was called superstition. Their practices were absorbed into institutions that removed the understanding of why they worked while keeping the forms that were useful to power.

The spring equinox became a tax date. The harvest threshold became a school term. The solstice became a shopping season. The lunar calendar survived only in the traditions too embedded in living bodies and communities to be fully extracted.

There is a library being rebuilt.

Not literally - though the Library of Alexandria, which held the largest collection of human knowledge in the ancient world before it burned, is not far from my mind when I think about what it is becoming.

The Corridor is a community. Inside it is a library - a growing collection of frameworks, practices and tools that work across three scales simultaneously.

The individual. The business. The collective.

Worthy - the first book - is about the individual. The who you are beneath what you were taught to perform. And the contracts that make us question our worth.

Quantum GRC - the framework and the book - is about the business. Building the structures that can hold the mission that your business is here to deliver.

And something forming at the collective level. Not yet ready to be fully named. But connected to everything above - to the calendar, to the cycles, to what was taken and what is being returned, so we can rebuild the next level.

On 24th October a classroom opens inside The Library

It's called The Veil.

Seven days. Complimentary. No purchase required.

It runs from 24th October through to Halloween - the one night a year when even mainstream culture acknowledges that something is happening. When the veil between what is seen and what is real grows thin. When every tradition that predates ours understood you needed to be prepared, protected and paying attention.

The Veil starts to returns what was taken. Day by day. The knowing that was extracted, criminalised and buried - and that has been sitting in you all along, running quietly underneath everything you were taught to trust instead.

You don't have to believe in any of it.

You just have to be curious enough to walk through.

The Veil lives inside The Library - the community where the knowledge is being rebuilt, one room at a time.

And in true Genie style - we are not going to tell you which classroom is yours.

We are going to invite you to draw a card.

The Library holds sixteen rooms with more being created. Each one returns something different. The room that finds you is the one you are ready for - whether you know it yet or not.

Pull a card. Find your room. Join The Library and DM the Genie with what you drew.

Or request to join the Library now for your 7 days inside The Veil begins on 24th October.
